At the beginning of the Legends books, Dalamar is a young dark elf of 90 years, which is about 25 in human years. Dalamar is a very handsome elf with long, flowing brown hair, brown eyes, and an extremely charming and winning personality. He is in excellent health and condition, well-built and muscular.
Dalamar had just recently completed his Test and is a skilled in his field of study, magic. His first task as an apprentice is to serve Raistlin, the Master of the Tower of High Sorcery in Palanthus.
The Conclave of Wizards feared Raistlin more than any other threat in the history of their Orders. In a secret meeting, they asked for a volunteer to serve as Raistlin's apprentice and to spy on him for the Conclave. Dalamar volunteered without hesitation, he was facinated by Raistlin's talent and knew he could learn much from him.
The dark elf was originally from Silvanesti. He would have been allowed to proceed only so far in his magical arts and then forbidden by law to gain further power, elves see magic as useful not seeing it as a way to gain power. Ambitious and hungery for knowledge and power that magic would surely bring, Dalamar turned from the White Robes, that all elves wear, and chose to wear the Black. He continued his studies in secret, hiding himself away from his people. But eventually he was discovered and was cast out of his race by Porthios, then the new Speaker of the Sun and Stars. Thus Dalamar became a dark elf, one who is cast out of the light of his people.
Bound hand and foot and blind-folded, Dalamar was driven in a cart to the borders of Silvanesti and thrown out. This was about one year after the end of the War of the Lance. Dalamar made his way to the Tower of High Sorcery at Wayreth, where he took the Test and completed it successfully. The Test for Dalamar involved his lingering love and longing for his elven homeland and people - a matter he had to resolve within himself before he could be free to devote himself to the magic.
Dalamar's first love and loyalty is to his magic and to the Conclave. He admires Raistlin however, and is fascinated by the power of the archmage. Thus he willingly risks his life to study with him and serve as his apprentice. But Dalamar is smart enough to know that man was not meant to challenge the gods and that only destruction can result from such vast ambition.
He understands that balance and order must be maintained in the world or chaos will rein. Thus he respects Elistan as a cleric of Paladine. He fears Raistlin as a renegade who would topple the balance and order and throw the world into chaos. Dalamar's admiration and fascination with his dark master, however, have led him more than once to seriously question whether he could truly destroy Raistlin if he had to do so.
Like so many other men before him, Dalamar is highly attracted to Kitiara. Dalamar is tested in his devotion to his art and his ability to sacrifice worldly ambition and perhaps even his life for it.
